Flat vs Fabric: Choosing the Right Signage for a #MonsterImpact

Some signage is built to stand still for a decade. Some is built to pack down on Friday and fly up again on Monday. Both can stop people in their tracks – but they get there in very different ways.

On one side, there’s fabricated signage: three-dimensional, hard-wearing and made to be touched. Think steel letters, illuminated fascias and towering totems. On the other, there’s fabric signage: vivid, seamless, lightweight graphics stretched taut across a frame, capable of covering a whole wall without a single visible join.

So which one does your brand need? The honest answer: it depends on where it’s going, how long it needs to last and what you want people to feel when they see it. Here’s how to choose – and when the smartest move is to use both.

Fab: So what is fabricated signage?

Fabricated signage is three-dimensional signage built from hard materials such as stainless steel, aluminium, mild steel and acrylic. It has depth, shadow and structure. It doesn’t sit on a wall – it leaps off it, in fact sometimes it actually forms the wall!

Signage fabrication blends engineering with craft. Materials are precision-cut, shaped, welded, sprayed and finished, then fitted with LED illumination where a sign needs to shine after dark. The result is signage you can run your hand across.

You’ll find it everywhere a brand needs to make a permanent statement:

Fabricated signage is at its best when the sign is permanent, needs to survive the British weather and has to say “premium” at first glance.

Fabric: what is fabric signage?

Fabric signage is graphics printed onto textile rather than a rigid board. The most popular format is a tension fabric display (sometimes called a tension fabric system, or TFS). The printed fabric is finished with a silicone edge graphic (SEG) strip, which is pushed into a channel in an aluminium frame. As it locks in, the fabric pulls drum-tight, leaving a crease-free, frameless finish.

The big advantage is scale. Fabric displays can cover huge surfaces in one continuous image, with no seams breaking up the artwork. Pair a frame with LED lightboxes, and you get backlit graphics that glow edge to edge.

We print large-scale fabric in-house in Birmingham on our EFI VUTEk FabriVU 340i dye-sublimation printer, then finish it on a 5-metre Hasler Magner conveyor cutter. That means big graphics, rich colour and quick turnarounds – without outsourcing a thing.

Fabric signage is also a greener choice. Our UFabrik PET-based fabrics are fully recyclable, and because frames are reusable, a refresh means a new skin – not a new structure.

Fabric signage is at its best when you need large-scale impact, regular graphic changes, or a display that has to travel.

Fab vs fabric: head-to-head

Neither is “better”. They’re built for different jobs. Here’s how they stack up.

The Look

Fabricated signage offers 3D depth, shadow and texture, whereas fabric signage offers vivid, seamless, edge-to-edge colour

Hollywood Monster Icon

Best For

Fabricated signage is best for permanent brand statements, whereas fabric signage works best for large-scale graphics and changing campaigns

Hollywood Monster Icon

Lifespan

Whereas fabricated signage is built to last for years outdoors, fabric signage frames last for years, but graphics are swapped as needed

Hollywood Monster Icon

Scale

For letters, logos, fascias and totems, use fabricated signage. For whole walls and feature backdrops in one image, use fabric

Hollywood Monster Icon

Weight

Fabricated signage is heavy and requires structural fixings, whereas fabric signage is lightweight, easy to handle and easy to hang

Hollywood Monster Icon

Changing It

Changing fabricated signage requires a new build, whereas fabric signage requires a new fabric skin in the same frame

Hollywood Monster Icon

Portability

Fabricated signage is fixed in place, yet fabric signage packs down for transport and reuse

Hollywood Monster Icon

Illumination

For halo-lit, face-lit or edge-lit letters, look to fabricated. For backlit lightboxes for an even glow, look to fabric

Indoor or Outdoor

Fabricated works for both, fabric mainly indoor

Cost

Higher upfront, long-term investment for fabricated, lower cost per refresh after the first frame

When to choose fabricated, fabric, or both

Choose fabricated signage for permanent presence

If your sign is the face of a building, it needs to last. A shopfront fascia, a corporate HQ entrance or a retail park totem has to survive wind, rain and years of passing traffic. It also has to look premium every single day. That’s a job for fabrication.

Choose fabric signage for scale, speed and change

If your space hosts something new every few weeks, fabric is your friend. Retail campaigns, seasonal window displays, reception feature walls and venue branding all benefit from swapping a graphic without rebuilding a structure. And when you need a single image to fill a 10-metre wall, large-format fabric does it without a seam in sight.

When to choose fabricated, fabric, or both

Choose fabric for events and exhibitions

Show stands live hard lives. They’re built, broken down, shipped and rebuilt. Lightweight fabric displays fold into a fraction of the space of rigid panels, and the frames come back year after year. As an official beMatrix bePartner and the NEC Group’s print partner, we build events and exhibition stands that combine modular beMatrix exhibition displays with tension fabric graphics. Browse our exhibition graphics for more.

Choose both for a special build

The biggest impact often comes from combining the two. Fabricated features bring depth and permanence; fabric brings scale and colour. Our special builds team mixes materials to create installations that couldn’t exist with one alone.

Take BP Pulse Live. When the NEC arena relaunched, we delivered custom-fabricated acrylic, aluminium, mild steel and stainless steel features alongside tensioned fabric systems for modular, high-impact graphics. Add 1,800m² of exterior vinyl, integrated LED illumination and over 3,000 man-hours, and the result is a venue that feels as electric as the shows it hosts – all delivered around a live events calendar.

That’s #MonsterImpact: not fab or fabric, but the right material in the right place.

Let’s talk all things print and signage

Whatever you’re building – a fascia that owns the high street, a feature wall that stops visitors in their tracks, or a show stand that turns heads at the NEC – we’ll help you pick the right material for the job. Then we’ll design it, make it in-house in Birmingham and install it nationwide.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a tension fabric display?

A tension fabric display is a printed fabric graphic with a silicone edge (SEG) strip that slots into an aluminium frame. Once fitted, the fabric pulls tight for a smooth, crease-free, frameless finish. It’s sometimes called a tension fabric system or TFS.

What is the difference between fabricated signage and fabric signage?

Fabricated signage is three-dimensional and built from hard materials like metal and acrylic, usually for permanent use. Fabric signage is printed onto textile and stretched across a frame, making it lightweight, seamless and easy to change.

Can fabric signage be used outdoors?

Tension fabric displays are designed mainly for indoor spaces such as retail, offices, venues and exhibitions. For permanent outdoor signage, fabricated signage or large format print on weather-resistant materials is usually the better fit.

How large can fabric displays be?

Very large. We print large-scale fabric in-house and finish it on a 5-metre conveyor cutter, and graphics can be joined seamlessly across frames to cover whole walls. Talk to our team about the exact dimensions your space needs.

Is fabric signage sustainable?

It can be. Frames are reusable, so a refresh only needs a new graphic. Our UFabrik PET-based fabrics are fully recyclable, and our PVC-free alternatives help keep plastic out of landfill.

How long does fabricated signage last?

Well-made fabricated signage is designed to last for many years, even outdoors. Lifespan depends on the materials, finish and location, so we match each build to its environment.

Can I combine fabricated and fabric signage?

Absolutely – and it often delivers the biggest impact. Fabricated features add depth and permanence, while fabric adds scale and colour. Our BP Pulse Live project used both side by side.
